Website Tonight 4.0.6 You can do it, Icon help.

Greetings,

Back again so soon?

We've just released version 4.0.6 of Website Tonight.  There's a new feature, Favicon support, as well as slight changes to existing ones. Nearly all of these changes have been driven by your feedback and requests on the blog.

FavIcon

We just added the ability to customize your site's favicon. If you're not familiar with favicons, they're those little icons that show up next to the site name or URL:

The favicon selector control can be found within the settings tab, as well as Manage > Website information. It couldn't be simpler to set up. just upload an appropriate image, press the page's Save button, and then publish.

The tricky part is in creating a favicon because there are a lot of restrictions. For example, it must be 16 pixels wide by 16 pixels high. It must be an ICO file if you want most browsers to be able to see it. Internet Explorer can only use ICO-based favicons. If you're not worried about Internet Explorer, then you can use GIF-, JPEG-, or even PNG-formatted images (all the other browsers will show them just fine).

There are a plethora of resources on the Web about creating favicons, as this Google search for favicon shows. Favicons aren't terribly important but they are a detail that will make your web site more your own.

Upload images in files and zip progress.

We'd received several requests to add the ability to specify that images be uploaded and stored as files rather than within the gallery. To accommodate this request, we've added a check box under Manage > upload files on both our regular and bulk uploader.  Within the same section, we've added a progress bar on the unzip files feature. It still takes the same time but looks better while doing so.  There's many small changes to polish the application's stability and usability including more usable defaults on the add video section, improvements to the html editor, and allowing dib and TIFF files to be uploaded.

Until next time, please keep your suggestions rolling in.

Ok, I like the new favicons. I have tried uploading a .ico file but WST says "upload a valid file format". It is a valid file format. I can upoad a .gif, and .jpg format and the favicon works fine but not the .ico file. Whats up? What are the specs for making a valid .ico file.

      Greetings,

Without knowing more about the tool you  are using to  creating the ico file , it's not  possible to just add ico as an extension and have it work. ICO's  for the address bar are 16 x 16  ,  while it's similar to BMP Windows sees this as a specifc file type and unless you program specifically outputs in this format it's unlikely to be accepted.

There's an online tool that  generates these over on Dynamic Drive.    Personally I used a program called IcoFX to create mine and a search for that should  have you with a well dressed address bar in no time.
